The Army Foundation College

In May 2000 we were awarded the first major private sector contract to deliver vocational education and training on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Our contract is part of an innovative 30 year Public Private Finance Initiative (PFI) set up by the MoD to build and manage its new, purpose-designed Army Foundation College (AFC) in Harrogate.

This scheme achieved the ‘Best Operational MoD Project’ award at the Public Private Finance Awards in June 2003 and is currently shortlisted for the Best UK Operational Project in the Public Private Awards 2009. In 2003, it was the ‘strong partnering relationship, excellent facilities and strong educational results´ provided by the Nord Anglia Education Ltd and Jarvis plc joint venture that so greatly impressed the judges At the Army Foundation College we are responsible for developing and delivering an integrated programme of military, leadership, vocational education and sports services and training for up to 1,344 Junior Soldiers (JS) a year, through a 12-month residential course.

Our work at the College has been highly successful, producing educational achievement for graduating Junior Soldiers in Key Skills that is significantly above the national averages. 100% of the Junior Soldiers graduating in December 2008 achieved the Apprenticeship for IT Users. For the last nine intakes, the pass rate for the NVQ Level 2 for IT Users has stood at 100%, which means that not a single one of the 4,150 Junior Soldiers who have graduated from the Army Foundation College since December 2004 has gone out of the gates without that award.
