Senegal 2012 - Making a Difference!

Les Cajoutiers is an association helping children in Senegal have a chance of a better future—set up by a dynamic Belgian lady, Sophie Camara-Corynen.

Les Cajoutiers has set up, or more precisely has built, a school which currently houses 250 children.

Relying entirely on donations and individual sponsorship the school provides education, a hot meal and healthcare for each child attending the school.

BISB became involved three years ago via a former parent of the school and our ever enthusiastic and adventurous CAS & Geography teacher, Mr Taylor. Our students raised funds for the school and visited last year too to help built the next phase.

Whilst this connection clearly had an impact on underprivileged children of Africa it is probably true to say its impact was greater on our students, who described the experience variously as “life changing” and one of the most significant in their lives.

At BISB we see projects like this as a fantastic opportunity for learning outside the classroom for our students, as well as providing wonderful ways for us to contribute to our global society. Our students learn authentically about the different world views of others, what their own capabilities are for leadership, creativity, courage and resilience.

There are a number of ways through which you can help!

  • You can use our Lunch for Learning initiative and buy a leaf on the Tree of Life! Green leaves cost 1000HUF, Silver ones are 5000HUF and Gold ones are 10000HUF. Les Cajoutiers provides a warm meal for each child every day - often this is the only proper meal these children will have. You can purchase leaves at pickup times in front of the auditorium!
    • By buying a green leaf, you will cover the cost of a meal a day for 1 child for 1 month!
    • If you buy a silver leaf, you are covering the cost of the daily meal for 1 child for 6 months!
    • When buying a gold leaf, you will be ensuring that 1 child receives their daily warm meal for 1 year!
  • IB students are organising a Talent Show on Monday, 13th of February at 19:00! You can buy a ticket from as little as 500HUF, but donations of larger amounts are also welcomed. Tickets are available for sale every afternoon during pickup time in front of the auditorium! All proceeds will go towards the Senegal Project.
  • Sophie and her team always welcome donations of the following items, and the students will be delighted to fill their suitcases with them!
    • Summer clothing for children
    • Picture books in French
    • Stationary items
    • Colouring books
    • Beads for craft and threading
  • You will find a Change for Change basket in front of the Reception Desk. Please feel free to donate any loose change you do not need!

More information will follow regarding the trip closer to their time of departure on the 18th of February!
