BISB BOOK DAY 2012
Friday 2nd March 2012

We want to celebrate the incredible world of books and get children excited about reading.

Book Day is designed to celebrate the wonders of reading.  We want to celebrate the incredible world of books and get children excited about reading. We want to remind children (and parents) about how great books are and how they can be used for enjoyment as well as learning.

The theme for this year’s book week is ‘Old and New’. During the day and in Literacy lessons in the week leading up to Book Day, the children will be participating in numerous fun filled and stimulating activities based around reading, books and this theme. Special activities will include;

  • Dressing Up Day – On Friday 2nd March, children come to school dressed up as a character from a book they have read and bring along the book if they have it.
  • Used Book Sale – Pupils in the Student and Eco councils will be encouraging their classmates to bring in good quality second-hand books in any language to be sold on Friday 2nd March. Each book will cost 1€ and all proceeds will go towards our  Cows for Africa’ appeal.

Books should be brought to school no later than the morning of Friday 2nd March.

All books need to be in good condition and appropriate for their age.

  • Special project or display – Classes will choose a project to complete throughout the week such as creating a story sack, class book, book corner, door display, talking books or producing a movie or documentary to share with another class.
  • Story time and Shared Reading - Children will have stories read to them by different teachers and parents. Older students will be paired with younger students to read and talk about books.

Thursday 1st March – Usborne World Book Day Sale Peknikova An Usborne Book seller will be at school with book samples and catalogues from which children can select and place orders for books. All books need to be pre-paid on the day and will then be delivered to school within 2 weeks. All children in will be issued with a free book token which has a face value of €1.50. World Book Day tokens can be accepted as part payment for any book worth €4.50 or more. Children wishing to participate in this sale should bring money to school in an envelope clearly marked with their name and the amount of money they have. Children in Years 2-6 will visit with their teachers. Any children at Dolinkseho will need to attend with their parents after school. Parents are welcome to visit the Book Sale throughout the day.

Parental Involvement

  • Book Reading - We would love for parents to come into school and share some stories with the children. You could read to your child’s own class or also with other classes in our special Reading Grotto! You could read a book in English or share a book in your native language, explaining the story to the children as you go or asking children to tell the story back to you in English at the end. You could read with the whole class or in small groups.

  • Book Sale - Parents are asked to encourage their children to donate books for the charity book sale.

  • Recommend a book on our Graffiti Wall - Parents are invited to write on our special Graffiti Wall and recommend a good book. This can be in any language. We look forward to your contributions!

If you would like to get involved, please speak with your child’s class teacher.
