Time spent in Nursery and Reception will mean that children are confident and motivated, ready for us to introduce Literacy and Numeracy more formally. We take great care to keep children interested and happy in their work.
The broad and balanced UK curriculum provides the basis for our formal curriculum at Key Stage 1 and ensures progression and continuity. We adopt a CREATIVE approach to curriculum delivery and believe that our cross curricular approach helps the children to make connections in their learning and makes their learning more relevant to their world. We recognize the technological world that our students are growing up in and so we are always building opportunities for ICT to be used and exploited across the curriculum. Even our youngest students are involved in researching, word processing, making presentations, recording and filming.
Children at this age need to be active and so we adopt a “Hands On and Practical” approach to learning. We learn using the indoor and outdoor environments within our school and where possible use the wider local environment such as; being “Woodland Wanderers” in the nearby forest, shopping trips the local supermarket, landscape drawing, mapping or measuring in the surrounding area. Children sing, paint, build, investigate, print, talk, role play, dance, play games, explore and much more!
Through this stimulating KS 1 curriculum, all children are nurtured to develop their knowledge and understanding and key skills across a broad curriculum that includes Literacy, Numeracy, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Music, Drama, Art, Physical Education and Swimming. All children have lessons in music and physical education taught by specialist teachers. They also participate in swimming lessons taught in a local swimming pool by excellent swimming instructors.
After all this fun, challenge and great learning our children are now well prepared and motivated to move into the next phase of their education in Key Stage 2.
