Charity Work

Charity forms a core part of The British School of Beijing. As well as working with NordStar (Nord Anglia Education’s community investment programme), where all our students are encouraged to help local communities thrive through education, we also take part in additonal charity work.

Local charities such as Roundabout and The Special Commune benefit directly from our charity events at the school, and students are taught the value of helping others who may be less fortunate. We have hosted book sales, bake sales and we even have business studies students forming their own companies who donate all their profits to charity at the end of the year.

We host regular events such as the Christmas and Summer Fayres which are kindly supported by the local community and often raise in excess of 60,000 RMB.

Some of our most recent projects include:

The Christmas Fayre

The recent Christmas Fayre raised 54,953 RMB for the New Hope Foundation, China.

The Shoe Box Appeal

This year, thanks to the generosity of parents, children and staff, we have beaten our target in the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. We collected an astounding 1,027 shoe boxes!

We delivered a mountain of boxes to orphanages and Migrant schools around Beijing and China. We delivered 1027 shoeboxes and bags to children in four different migrant schools and sent 152 boxes to our rural school in Gansu.

The Parents' Association Annual Charity Ball

Each year, the Parents' Association host a ball for Charity. The most recent one in March, 'Alice in Wonderland' was a great success, raising over 200,000 RMB for our charities; China Little Flower, and Alenah's Home. Both charities work with disabled, orphaned and sick children in the Beijing area. We will be able to give 100,000 RMB to each of then so they can continue their valuable work.

Chatterbox Cafe

Chatterbox Cafe in Shunyi is run by parent volunteers. This Autumn they have donated to the following causes:

30,000 RMB to Alehnas Children's Home

Alehnas is a charity that organises operations for physically disabled children. They are all abandoned children who will go on to be adopted. There are a few Mothers from our school who volunteer their time at the home, and one Mum is a social worker who helps with the adoption process.

15,000 RMB to Yang Bing

Yang Bing, a five-year-old boy, is in hospital in Beijing awaiting for a bone marrow transplant. He comes from a desperately poor family in the Gansu province. Both his parents are bone marrow matches, however the treatment cannot go ahead without 300,000 RMB.

We were told that if we could get the money together in 20 days, he could have the treatment and avoid having to go through another dose of chemotherapy. Although the chemotherapy helps to fight his infection, it also drastically decreases his chance of the eventual transplant being successful.

The Roundabout Book Fair

At the beginning of this academic year, our Shunyi campus hosted the Roundabout Book Fair. The September Book Fair took an astounding 185,616 RMB. In addition, we had a donation of 18,000 RMB to help reach our target. In total, The British School of Beijing helped to raise an incredible 203,616 RMB.

Thank you to all those who supported the Book Fair. We hope that the up coming Book Fair in January will be just as successful.

Our students take part in fund-raising events throughout the year to raise awareness of charities chosen by our student council body.
