Easing the Transition to Secondary School

On Sunday 26 June our Year 6 students enjoyed a taste of what it is going to be like in Year 7 when they visited secondary classrooms for ‘taster’ lessons.

In English students had a taste of Gothic Horror, one of the Year 7 units they will cover next year.  Whilst in Maths they looked at how number systems are formed and then generated their very own number system based on the cuneiform of the ancient Mesopotamians. This was a good example of an integrated unit of work, where learning from maths was linked to learning in History.

Secondary teachers frequently look for ways to integrate student learning across different subject areas.  Mr Steve Shaw, Head of the Secondary School states, “In our experience, integrated units of work engage students more effectively and can lead to improved learning outcomes.”

In addition to the new content, students had the opportunity to meet the secondary staff they will be working with next year and visit their new classrooms. The students were extremely enthusiastic and are looking forward to their studies next year.
